What is pipe processing automation? What is different from regular automation?
In many fields such as petrochemicals, engineering machinery, new energy vehicles, and home decoration water supply and drainage, pipe fittings are essential basic components - from small home decoration elbows of a few centimeters to large chemical pipeline tees of several meters, the demand for pipe fittings of different specifications and materials has been growing. With the transformation and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, the automation of pipe processing has gradually entered the public eye. Many people may confuse it with ordinary industrial automation, but in fact, the differences between the two are not small.
Firstly, let's clarify the concept of automation in pipe fitting processing. Pipe fittings themselves are a general term for the components that play a role in connecting, controlling, changing direction, diverting, sealing, etc. in pipeline systems. Common ones include elbows, tees, flanges, reducers, pipe joints, etc. The processing involves multiple processes such as cutting, bending, chamfering, welding, grinding, and testing. The precision requirements, material characteristics, and size specifications of different pipe fittings vary greatly. Automation of pipe fittings processing refers to the integration of industrial robots, intelligent CNC equipment, machine vision, production management systems, and other technologies to achieve automated processing of the entire process from raw material input to finished product output, based on the characteristics of pipe fittings processing. It does not require manual participation in basic operations and can also adapt to production orders of multiple varieties and different batches.
Compared with ordinary industrial automation, the core difference between the two is first reflected in the flexibility of adaptation. Ordinary automation is mostly a standardized solution designed for a single product or process, such as turning automation and welding automation for a single part. Once the product specifications are changed, it is necessary to re debug the equipment and replace the fixtures, which often takes hours or even days, and is only suitable for large-scale production of fixed varieties. But the pipe fitting industry mostly has a multi variety, small batch order structure, and a product may only be produced in a few pieces, so changing production is the norm. Pipe fitting processing automation has considered the need for production change from the beginning of the design. Only by calling the preset processing parameters in the system, you can quickly complete the production change. Even pipe fittings of different materials and sizes can be switched within ten minutes, giving consideration to the efficiency of mass production and the flexibility of small batch orders.
Secondly, the error control logic of the two is completely different. Ordinary automation can run according to preset programs without the need for real-time adjustment of errors in the processed object, making it suitable for solid and rigid workpieces. However, most of the pipe fittings are hollow thin-walled structures, which are prone to rebound and deformation during the processing. Even for materials from the same batch, there may be slight errors. The finished products produced by ordinary automation processing are prone to problems such as angle deviation and non-conforming dimensions, resulting in a low pass rate.
Most pipe processing automation systems are equipped with force sensors and machine vision positioning systems, which can monitor deformation in real-time during the processing and automatically adjust processing parameters. For example, in the process of bending pipes, the system can automatically monitor the rebound of the pipes, adjust the bending angle in advance, and ensure accuracy even for thin-walled pipes. The qualification rate of finished products can generally increase from about 80% in manual processing to over 98%.
Thirdly, there is a significant gap in the ability to integrate processes. Ordinary automation is mostly single station and single process automation. Cutting is one set of equipment, bending is one set of equipment, and welding is another set. Manual transportation and repeated clamping are required between different processes, which not only wastes time but also easily leads to accuracy errors due to repeated clamping.
The automation of pipe fitting processing is a fully integrated solution that can complete all processes from feeding to finished product inspection with just one clamping, without the need for manual intervention. This not only shortens the processing cycle but also eliminates errors caused by repeated clamping, resulting in a production efficiency improvement of over 30% compared to ordinary automated decentralized processing.
In general, automation in pipe fitting processing is not simply applied to pipe fitting processing, but a specialized automation solution tailored to the production pain points of the pipe fitting industry. In recent years, with the increasing demand for precision and delivery speed of pipe fittings in industries such as new energy and engineering machinery, the popularity of automation in pipe fitting processing has also been constantly increasing. In the future, it will also become the mainstream production method in the pipe fitting processing industry, helping the industry achieve quality improvement and cost reduction, and promoting the upgrading of the entire manufacturing industry.
